AI literacy bare minimum: Box VP proof of build analysis

The AI hiring filter is starting to look less like a vocabulary test and more like show and tell. Rand Wacker, Box's vice president of product strategy, told Business Insider that AI literacy can get a candidate into the room, but it does not do much work after that. His stronger signal is practical evidence: something built with AI that an interviewer can examine. The useful lesson is not that every applicant needs an App Store hit. It is that vague fluency is easier to claim than a prototype someone can click.

The floor moved from literacy to proof

Business Insider reported that Wacker described AI literacy as a "bare-minimum requirement" for candidates applying to Box roles. That phrasing matters because a skill that once sounded distinctive is becoming an entry condition. According to Business Insider, Wacker also said case studies that had been part of Box interviews now feel outdated, and he wants candidates to prototype their ideas. The strongest examples he cited were products candidates built with AI, including apps on the App Store that were "monetizing to some degree."

For learners, the practical read is straightforward: do not stop at saying you can use AI tools. Show what happened when you used them on a defined problem. A small internal workflow, a rough customer support helper, or a personal productivity tool can all make the conversation more concrete if the work is coherent. The point is not polish for its own sake. It is evidence that you can frame a problem, choose tools, test an output, and finish a usable version.

Basic AI claims are getting crowded

Stack Overflow's 2025 Developer Survey shows why a resume line that says only used AI tools may not separate candidates for long. The survey found that 84% of respondents use or plan to use AI tools in their development process, up from 76% the prior year. It also found that 51% of professional developers use AI tools daily. When usage becomes that common, the hiring question shifts from exposure to judgment.

Coursera's Job Skills Report 2026 points in the same direction from the training side. The report says it draws on data from 6 million enterprise learners across nearly 7,000 organizations, and it found a 234% year over year increase in GenAI enrollments among enterprise learners. That is a lot of people learning the language of AI at the same time. If everyone is adding the same vocabulary to their profile, the candidate who can show a working artifact gives the interviewer something sturdier to evaluate.

What proof of build should show

Business Insider reported that Wacker wants candidates to show products they built with AI, even when those products have nothing to do with Box's business. That detail is important because it separates domain fit from builder signal. A prototype outside the employer's market can still reveal how someone thinks, experiments, and handles the messy middle between an idea and a working version. It can also expose whether the candidate understands the limits of the tool rather than treating AI output as finished work.

For a 25 year old candidate, the easiest version may be a small public side project with a demo, a short writeup, and a clear explanation of what changed after testing. For a 45 year old candidate, the stronger route may be a work adjacent prototype that respects confidentiality while showing process, constraints, and business sense. Different constraints, same hype. The artifact should answer three quiet questions: what problem did you pick, why did AI help, and what did you do when the first version was wrong or incomplete?

Do not confuse training with a hiring signal

Coursera says its analysis spans Data, IT, and Software and Product Development, along with generative AI skills becoming essential for every role. That explains why AI courses are drawing attention, but enrollment is not the finish line. A useful learning path should leave you with something visible: a demo, a repo, a workflow description, or a before and after example. Without that, a course title can become just another soft claim in a crowded stack.

Business Insider's reporting on Wacker is not a universal hiring policy, and it should not be treated as one. Still, it is a clean signal of where some AI era interviews are heading: less abstract case study theater, more evidence of shipped thinking. Watch whether more employers start asking candidates to bring prototypes instead of talking through hypothetical prompts. If you are deciding where to spend your next month of learning, pick a narrow problem and build something small enough to finish. In this market, proof of build is harder to fake than AI literacy, and that is exactly why it is becoming useful.
