RS4 Unreal Shift After RuneScape 3, Years Away Analysis

RuneScape is old enough that its nostalgia now has nostalgia, which is not an insult. That is a business asset, a design burden, and a community trust fall all wearing the same party hat. So Jagex announcing RS4, a fourth RuneScape MMO built in Unreal Engine, is not just trailer confetti. It is a modernization case study with a dragon in the background and a very loud message: do not rebuild a living MMO like you are swapping a graphics preset.

The announcement gets an 8 out of 10 loading screens from me. Not because we have a game to judge, we do not. It earns that score because Jagex is saying the quiet part clearly enough: this is early, the platforms are not disclosed, the engine version is not disclosed, and the project is still a few years away. In MMO terms, that is not a delay, that is Tuesday.

The take, according to TechPowerUp

TechPowerUp reported that Jagex announced the fourth RuneScape MMO at RuneFest 2026 under the working title RS4, while noting most people are already calling it RuneScape 4. The same report says the game is being built in Unreal Engine, with no version named, and that it is the first numbered follow up since RuneScape 3 arrived in 2013. Just as important, TechPowerUp reported that RS4 is in early development with its own dedicated team, has no announced platforms, and is still "a few years away." That is boring in the healthiest possible way, like patch notes that say the economy exploit got fixed before launch.

TechPowerUp also gave the origin story, and it is the most useful part for anyone building or following live games. RS4 reportedly began as an expansion for RuneScape: Dragonwilds, Jagex's Unreal Engine 5 survival game, before growing into its own project after playtesters asked for a more traditional MMO take on that setting. That is product discovery with actual humans involved, not a slide deck wearing a wizard hat.

What works, according to IGN

IGN reported that Jagex described the new MMO as built "for a new generation of players" and said it will bring Gielinor to Unreal Engine while carrying forward the depth, freedom, and community led spirit associated with RuneScape. That pitch matters because RuneScape is not just terrain, quests, and goblins with legal departments. It is habits, trading rituals, skill grinds, social memory, and players who can explain a resource economy with the intensity of a courtroom witness.

IGN also reported that Jagex currently operates RuneScape itself, Old School RuneScape, and the spinoff RuneScape: Dragonwilds. That means RS4 is entering a live ecosystem, not replacing a boxed product on a shelf. The design challenge is less like launching a sequel and more like opening a new city next to three existing ones, then hoping nobody rage quits because the bank is on the wrong side of town.

What worries me, according to GamesRadar+

GamesRadar+ framed one key reassurance right in its report: "RS4 is not a replacement for any of our games." That sentence is doing heavy lifting, because MMO communities hear numbered sequel and immediately start checking whether their characters are about to become museum exhibits. The good read is that Jagex understands the danger of making existing players feel obsolete before the new project even has a platform list.

The risky read is also obvious. A new numbered RuneScape in Unreal Engine can create expectation debt years before release, especially when RuneScape 3 has been the last numbered entry since 2013, according to TechPowerUp. If Jagex keeps messaging this as a separate future project, great. If the hype machine starts treating it like a near term rescue button, that becomes the DMV of community management, many windows, many forms, nobody happy.

Verdict, according to Kotaku and IGN

Kotaku reported that the fourth RuneScape is the first mainline entry to take advantage of Unreal Engine, while IGN reported the project does not yet have an official title. That combination is the real story: modern tech, old brand, cautious naming, long runway. The adult in the room move is not pretending Unreal Engine magically solves MMO design. It is using a new platform when the cost of dragging legacy assumptions forward starts to exceed the cost of building something new.

For players, the practical takeaway is simple: do not wishlist a fantasy version of RS4 that Jagex has not described yet. Watch what the studio says about platforms, engine version, account continuity, and how the existing RuneScape games are supported while RS4 develops. For other studios, the lesson is even cleaner: if your live franchise has enough history to be a culture, announce modernization like a steward, not like a conqueror. Gielinor can evolve, but the goblin math still needs to add up.
