Digital Skills Pay: Indeed and ADB 2026 Analysis

A graduate résumé can say Python, ChatGPT, spreadsheets, and data visualization in the same cramped skills line. The harder question is whether a hiring manager can see any of it working. According to Human Resources Director, the Indeed and Asian Development Bank Skills That Pay 2026 report analyzed more than six million job postings across six Asia-Pacific markets from 2019 to 2024. Its blunt finding for early-career workers: nearly nine in 10 job ads require some level of digital competency, while just 13 per cent list no digital skills at all.

What the pay signal is really measuring

Human Resources Director reports that the Indeed and ADB research compared postings with the same job title at the same employer, while controlling for other requirements, to isolate the wage difference linked to digital skills. That matters because it cuts through the usual résumé fog. The premium is not just attached to people who get a fancier title. It is attached to digital proficiency inside comparable jobs.

Indeed Hiring Lab Australia adds the second important piece: the biggest changes are not confined to traditional tech roles. Its writeup says education, insurance, healthcare, and some engineering fields are seeing the fastest growth in digital skill requirements. That is the part graduates should not miss. Digital fluency is becoming a differentiator in ordinary roles, not only in postings with AI or engineer in the title.

The résumé implication is simple, but not easy. If everyone says they are comfortable with technology, the candidate who shows the actual workflow gets the signal advantage. A line that says data analysis is weaker than a portfolio note explaining what data you cleaned, what decision it supported, and what changed because of it.

Why early-career candidates should document workflows

ADB Knowledge Events describes the underlying study as a large-scale assessment of how digital and AI skills are transforming job markets across the region, using millions of Indeed postings and large language model techniques. The same ADB summary says digital skills have become a key labor-market requirement beyond traditional ICT roles, with demand growing fastest in low- and mid-digital occupations. That should change how graduates present themselves.

The target is not sounding like an AI specialist when the job is not one. For a first job, practical evidence beats a stack of vague claims. A useful portfolio entry can be small: a dashboard, a cleaned dataset, a process automation, a chatbot prototype for a campus service, or a short analysis that explains the tool choice and tradeoffs. The point is not to cosplay as an ML engineer. It is to show that you can use digital tools to improve a real task, communicate the result, and know where the tool is unreliable.

The credential trap is still real

ADB Knowledge Events, in its joint report launch with LinkedIn, says ADB and LinkedIn used LinkedIn Economic Graph data to examine digital jobs, skills, qualifications, and the impact of COVID-19 on job trends. The same event summary says ADB also surveyed employers and online education providers on digital credentials and how they are perceived compared with traditional qualifications and degrees. That is useful context, because certificates can help with screening, but they do not automatically prove workplace judgment.

This is where credential inflation sneaks in. A short course can be worthwhile if it leaves you with a usable artifact, a clear vocabulary, and enough structure to keep learning. It is thin if the outcome is only a badge and a list of terms. Before paying for a certificate, ask what you will be able to build afterward and whether that build can be shown to a nontechnical manager.

How to signal AI and digital fluency without overclaiming

Indeed Hiring Lab Australia says employers increasingly expect workers to be comfortable with technology whether they are teachers, shop assistants, or software engineers. Human Resources Director reports that employers are rethinking graduate programs as AI reshapes entry-level work, while human skills still affect hiring decisions. Put those together and the message is not learn every tool. It is learn enough to pair digital output with judgment, explanation, and accountability.

A stronger early-career résumé should connect skill, context, and evidence in one sentence. Instead of listing AI tools as a loose cluster, describe a project where you used an AI assistant to draft, test, classify, summarize, or compare outputs, then note how you checked the result. In interviews, be ready to explain what you would not automate. That answer often tells a hiring manager more than another certificate title.

For graduates in Asia-Pacific, the next hiring cycle will likely reward visible fluency more than performative fluency. Watch whether employers start asking for work samples, project portfolios, or digital credential evidence in more nontechnical roles. If they do, the best preparation is already available: pick a real workflow, improve it with digital tools, document the before and after, and make the proof easy to read.
