iPhone 18 Pro teardown: under display Face ID pixels

There is a tiny optical heist happening at the top of the iPhone 18 Pro. The loot is screen space, the getaway car is an OLED panel, and the accomplice is a pixel pattern that lets infrared light pass while looking innocent to your eyes. That is the hardware story inside REWA Technology’s teardown, and it is much more interesting than simply saying the Dynamic Island got smaller.

Apple did not just trim a graphic. According to MacRumors, reporting on REWA Technology’s teardown, Apple moved Face ID’s infrared camera under the display in the top left corner, then used a special pixel pattern above it so infrared light can pass through while the screen looks normal at typical viewing angles. That is the kind of buried design choice that tells you where the real engineering work went.

Teardown Lens: REWA Technology Opens the Front Door

REWA Technology says it fully disassembled the iPhone 18 Pro at REWA Lab, looking at the internal structure, motherboard, updated components, cooling system, parts compatibility, and repairability. MacRumors reports that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have a smaller Dynamic Island because Apple moved Face ID’s infrared camera under the display, rather than keeping all of that hardware inside the visible cutout.

The teardown also shows the repositioned infrared camera, according to MacRumors, which is the smoking flex cable in this little boardroom caper. The important part is not just that a sensor moved. It is that the display area above that sensor now has to do two jobs, show the normal image and provide a path for Face ID’s infrared camera.

MacRumors says the pixels above the infrared camera use a special pattern for exactly that balancing act. In electrical engineering terms, this is a packaging trade, not a magic trick, and the invoice gets paid in display design complexity.

Signal Path: MacRumors Shows the Pixel Trick

MacRumors says the screen looks completely normal at typical viewing angles, even though the pixel pattern above the infrared camera lets infrared light through. That sentence is the whole circus. A consumer sees fewer black pixels at the top of the phone; an engineer sees Apple asking one region of the panel to behave differently without making itself visually obvious.

This is why under display sensing is hard in a satisfying, annoyingly physical way. The camera cannot simply be wished behind the panel like a cable tucked behind drywall. The display has to remain a display, Face ID has to keep using its infrared camera, and the industrial design goal is to make the cutout give back space without turning the top of the screen into a weird optical pothole.

Measurement Check: MacObserver and Techlusive Put Scale on the Cutout

Before the teardown gave the mechanism, earlier reporting gave useful scale. MacObserver, citing leaks from yeux1122’s blog, reported that the Dynamic Island width would drop from 20.76mm to 13.49mm, described as about 35 percent smaller. Techlusive reported separate CAD renders suggesting a width around 14.98mm, roughly 25 percent smaller than the iPhone 17 Pro, while noting earlier reports of reductions up to 35 percent.

Those numbers do not have to match perfectly to teach the same lesson. The design direction is consistent across MacObserver, Techlusive, and MacRumors: Apple is trying to reclaim front glass while keeping Face ID in the system. The teardown matters because it moves the conversation from rumor geometry to actual component placement, which is where marketing adjectives go to meet calipers.

Repair Lens: REWA Technology Reminds Us the Front Is a System

REWA Technology says its teardown examined parts compatibility and repairability, not just the trophy shots of components on a bench. That matters because modern phone fronts are not just glass, pixels, and vibes. They are sensor windows, display regions, cameras, adhesives, flexes, and calibration decisions all forced into a space smaller than a stick of gum.

MacRumors also notes that the teardown shows other changes, including a larger 48 megapixel main camera with variable aperture. That is a separate rear camera story, but it reinforces the same theme: the phone is a three dimensional negotiation among optics, thermals, boards, and industrial design. When one subsystem moves, the rest of the device has to make room like commuters on a very expensive train.

For readers, the takeaway is simple: a smaller Dynamic Island is not just a prettier status bar. It is evidence that Apple is moving more sensing work under active display area, using pixel structure as part of the optical path. Watch the next teardown not just for what Apple announces, but for what the screws, sensors, and suspiciously special pixels confess after the heat pad comes out.
