Trusted Creator Recommendations: 2.5x Buy Breakdown

The creator economy has spent years treating reach like the scoreboard, as if a big enough audience could brute force a sale. Net Influencer just handed creators a more useful screenshot for the next brand deck: trusted creator recommendations make consumers 2.5 times more likely to buy, according to its report.

That is not just a nice stat to drop into a pitch call. It is the difference between renting attention and earning a shopper moment where the audience actually believes the recommendation belongs in their life. Platforms love the first one because it is easy to package. Creators, especially the ones with smaller but tighter communities, should be paying attention to the second.

What changed, according to Net Influencer

Net Influencer reports that trusted creator recommendations make consumers 2.5 times more likely to buy. Translation: the business case for creator partnerships is shifting away from raw reach buys and toward recommendation quality. If a campaign brief only asks for audience size and posting volume, it is probably measuring the easiest thing, not the thing most likely to move a shopper.

For creators, this is a useful reset. The report supports a pitch that says, in plain English, people buy when the recommendation feels earned, specific, and useful. For brands, it means the creator selection process should start with trust fit before format, not the other way around.

Why the trust signal is not just vibes, according to Wang and colleagues

The Net Influencer finding lines up with a broader research base. In a 2022 meta analytic study in SAGE Open, Jian Wang, Fakhar Shahzad, Zeeshan Ahmad, Muhammad Abdullah, and Nadir Munir Hassan examined trust and consumers purchase intention in social commerce platforms. The study included 20 effect sizes from 19 studies and states that trust plays a vital role in consumers purchase intentions in a social commerce environment.

That academic framing matters because social shopping is no longer a clean handoff from ad to product page. The SAGE Open study describes e commerce and social media integration as increasingly popular, especially with Web 2.0 technology. In creator terms, the recommendation, the comments, the product demo, and the community memory around past recommendations all sit in the same messy feed.

What platforms are really selling, according to YouTube and Social Media Today

YouTube has been explicit about the shopping lane, with its own blog framing YouTube Shopping around creator opportunities. Corporate translation: platforms want creator trust to become a commerce surface they can organize, measure, and keep close to their own ecosystems. That can be good for creators when tools reduce friction, but it also means platforms will keep trying to intermediate the relationship.

Reddit is another reminder that trust does not only live in polished creator posts. Social Media Today reported that people on Reddit are more likely to trust Reddit to verify AI recommendations than they are to trust family or friends. That is a wild little signal from the group chat economy: shoppers are looking for proof from communities, not just polished persuasion from accounts with nice lighting.

How creators and marketers should adjust, according to Social Media Today

Social Media Today has also reported that the top trusted sources for recommendations include a close friend, a family member, a brand advocate, and a product expert. That list is the cheat code hiding in plain sight. The best creator partnerships should borrow from all four roles: personal context, relational trust, genuine advocacy, and product competence.

So the practical move is not to abandon scale. It is to stop treating scale as the whole plan. Creators should document why their audience trusts their product judgment, and brands should brief creators with enough detail to make the recommendation concrete instead of interchangeable. The next wave of better creator commerce will come from partnerships that respect the audience as people deciding with limited time, limited money, and a very sensitive radar for forced posts.

Watch what platforms do next with shopping tools, creator storefronts, and recommendation surfaces. If they make trust easier to prove without flattening creators into ad slots, everybody wins. If they simply repackage reach with prettier dashboards, creators should remember the real update from Net Influencer: trusted recommendations are the part shoppers are actually responding to.
