DAZN LA Kings Analysis of a Streaming Regional Bundle

Local sports television used to be a bundle fans found by accident: pay TV box, regional channel, game. DAZN’s LA Kings partnership is a bet that the next version is rebuilt deliberately, app first, team by team. The press release version says access. The business version asks how many local rights can be stacked before a subscriber sees a sports home rather than another app.

That is why the Kings matter beyond hockey. A single team deal rarely changes a market by itself, but it can become the first tile in a regional product. DAZN is not just buying games. It is trying to rebuild the local bundle without asking the cable bundle for permission, which is a cleaner story until the bill arrives.

The deal: one team, larger footprint

According to Arash Markazi of The Sporting Tribune, DAZN’s new streaming partnership with the Los Angeles Kings gives fans another way to follow the team without a traditional television subscription. Markazi reported that the London-based sports platform also sees the Kings as a foothold in a market where it wants a larger presence. That distinction matters: the consumer offer is one team, while the business thesis is local aggregation.

The Sporting Tribune also reported that as the NBA and NHL move into their 2026-27 seasons, DAZN has acquired local rights to 19 teams across MLB, the NBA, NHL and WNBA over the past six months. The collection includes the Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs and Yankees, according to the same report. That is not a side quest from combat sports and international distribution. It is a regional sports strategy wearing a direct-to-consumer jacket.

The bundle math: aggregation is the asset

DAZN executive Zander Berlinski told The Sporting Tribune, “Anywhere you can get multiple teams in the same footprint, there’s a benefit to that.” He also said, “There’s a consumer benefit from a singular place to watch the teams you’re most likely fans of.” That is the whole regional bundle problem in two sentences: fans do not wake up wanting distribution architecture, but they will pay for fewer scavenger hunts.

The dry part is that convenience has to clear the rights fee. A Kings-only product competes with every other subscription in a household. A Kings plus other local teams product starts to look like the old RSN bundle, except the subscriber relationship, billing data and upsell path sit with the streamer. That is why the team count matters more than the slogan.

The tech stack behind the rights pitch

Sportico reported that DAZN agreed to acquire streaming tech developer ViewLift in a deal valued at roughly $100 million in cash and company equity, with the transaction expected to close this June. Sportico also reported that DAZN and ViewLift had previously been pitching teams, leagues and regional broadcasters on distinct streaming business models. Put plainly, rights without a usable product are expensive inventory. Product without rights is a nice demo.

The same Sportico report said DAZN’s strategy is built around acquiring rights and growing its monthly subscription plan, currently starting at $21 per month. It also reported that DAZN is open to offering games for free, as it did with last summer’s Club World Cup, and to working with linear channels to expand distribution. That is not one business model. It is a menu for teams trying to escape a shrinking local TV lane without losing every older viewer on the way out.

DAZN’s own hiring language points in the same direction. A DAZN careers posting for a Strategy Manager in New York says the role would support strategy and commercial analysis across the company’s U.S. regional sports business and build financial models to evaluate rights opportunities. Translation: this is spreadsheet work before it is fan service. The question is not whether streaming is modern. The question is whether the unit economics survive when local rights, churn, production and customer acquisition are all counted.

What to watch next in the RSN rebuild

DecodeTV reported that U.S. RSNs have turned to DAZN as the company’s sports strategy takes shape, citing deals with MSG Networks and YES Network. It also described DAZN as targeting the declining U.S. regional sports network business. That makes the Kings deal less of a standalone hockey arrangement and more of a proof point in a market where old distribution assumptions have become negotiable.

Sportico added another useful signal: DAZN considered buying Main Street Sports Group, operator of the FanDuel Sports Networks and the regional broadcaster for 20 NBA and NHL teams this season. That did not need to become a completed acquisition to reveal the ambition. DAZN is looking at rights, technology, linear partnerships and market clusters as pieces of the same board.

For fans, the next thing to watch is not whether one app gets a cleaner interface, though that would be civilized. Watch whether DAZN adds more teams in the same Southern California footprint, how it prices those rights, and whether free games become sampling or subsidy. For teams and media operators, the lesson is sharper: the next regional sports bundle will be judged less by nostalgia for the RSN and more by who controls the subscriber, the data and the renewal.
