On Signs Mbappé From Nike: Soccer Infrastructure

An endorsement deal usually sells you a face on a poster. On is trying to buy a front door into football. Kylian Mbappé leaving Nike for a Swiss running company reads like a celebrity switch until you look at the job description: product input, category credibility, and equity upside. The ad is only the visible part. The infrastructure is the point.

That matters because On is not simply adding another athlete to a roster. It is moving from premium running and tennis into a football boot market where Nike, Adidas, and Puma are established names, according to The Athletic. Challenger brands do not enter that room with a clever slogan alone. They need someone who makes retailers, players, and fans believe the product belongs there before the product has years of proof.

The Deal: Athlete as Market Entry

CNBC reported that On is expanding to soccer and signed Kylian Mbappé away from Nike to lead the push. The Athletic reported the sharper mechanics: the Real Madrid striker ended his long relationship with Nike to become the face of On's first expansion into football boots. The same report said On has been known for premium running shoes and had already moved into tennis, including a Roger Federer deal in 2019 that included equity. That sequence is the tell. On is using elite athletes not only as endorsers, but as category translators.

The Athletic also reported that On hired Thierry Henry as Director of Football, and that Henry had been working in the role since 2025 and helped convince Mbappé to join after his Nike contract expired this summer. That is not a decorative ambassador slot if the job is to help recruit, shape product credibility, and speak the sport's language inside a company built somewhere else. Brands call this innovation. More plainly, it is a market entry system with famous people attached.

The Money: Equity Changes the Read

The Athletic reported that the financial terms of Mbappé's deal have not been disclosed, and that Mbappé received equity in On. That matters more than any vague claim about a huge endorsement. A cash guarantee pays an athlete for attention. Equity pays an athlete if the company value grows, which makes the athlete partly exposed to the success or failure of the category push.

Sports Business Journal, citing The Athletic, noted that Mbappé had been with Nike since 2006, when he was nine. That kind of history is exactly why this move is useful for On. The company is not buying a random celebrity cameo. It is taking a player closely associated with Nike and asking the market to reconsider which brands are allowed to matter in football boots.

There is a clean lesson here for anyone reading athlete partnership announcements. If terms are not disclosed, ignore the adjectives and look for structure. Does the athlete get equity, product influence, IP ownership, a royalty, or just a fee and a photo shoot. In this case, the equity is the business headline, because it turns Mbappé from rented reach into a participant in On's upside.

The Product: Credibility Has to Survive the Grass

Le Monde with AFP reported that On announced its entry into football alongside Mbappé and plans to launch its first football boots next year. That timing gives the deal a practical test. A boot category is not won in a launch video. It has to pass through fit, traction, durability, player trust, and the unglamorous reality that athletes notice bad equipment quickly.

The Athletic reported that On said Mbappé would be central to its football journey and would work directly with product teams. Strip out the polish and the ask is straightforward: On wants Mbappé's credibility to reduce the friction of entering a sport where incumbents have decades of locker room habit. Thierry Henry's role points in the same direction. On is trying to build football fluency inside the company, not just football awareness outside it.

That is also why this is different from a normal sponsorship carousel. The team brand remains Real Madrid. The athlete brand is Mbappé. On is using the athlete brand to make a new product category feel less foreign, which is a subtler bet than simply plastering a logo across a campaign.

What to Watch Next

Sportico described the move as ending Mbappé's 20 year run with Nike, while CNBC framed it as On's expansion to soccer. Those two facts together explain the stakes. Nike loses a longtime football asset, and On gains a ready made credibility bridge into a category it has not historically owned.

The next useful signals will not be the loudest ones. Watch whether On signs more football players, whether Henry's role produces visible product choices, and whether the first boots are treated as serious equipment rather than merch for Mbappé fans. If the boots work, the endorsement becomes distribution infrastructure. If they do not, equity does not save the product. It just makes the lesson more expensive.
